Amsterdam-based Dutch singer-songwriter Lucky Fonz III
(born Otto Wichers, 1981) is deeply rooted in American song traditions; from Cash and Dylan to
Bright Eyes and Will Oldham. After short stints as a pianist, DJ and busker he started performing
traditional folkmusic whilst living in Edinburgh, Scotland. Back in the Netherlands, he became a
solo-performing singer-songwriter making his mark on the thriving Amsterdam underground folk circuit.
In a relatively short period of time he managed to become a popular live act, and his songs have earned
him a devoted following among both Dutch indie fans as well as the roots crowd.
In the spring of 2006 he self-released the critically acclaimed
debut album 'Lucky Fonz III'. The songs were picked up first by indie-radiostations, later by national
radio. Throughout the year 2006, he won three prizes for his performances, among which the Grolsch Grote
Prijs of The Netherlands for singer-songwriters, Holland's most prestigious prize for new acts. Lucky has
played several festivals (such as Noorderslag 2007 and 2008) and opened up for acts such as Larkin Grimm,
Curtis Eller, Badly Drawn Boy and Jason Molina. In the spring of 2007 he toured Australia supporting The
Beautiful Girls and CW Stoneking. April 2008 Lucky toured in South Africa and performed at the renowned
OppiKoppi festival.
His second album ('Life is Short') was released October 2007 (in
the NL and Belgium). His new songs have a more distinctly European feel, incorporating influences
such as the French chanson, gypsy song and English balladry. Even so, the blues, country and folk are
never far away.
Lucky is also active as a piano-player in the free-jazz trio
Aemstellarcreek, who self-released their album 'Live at Crea 206'. He also writes songs for other singers.
Lucky's aim as an artist is, in own words, 'to make many beautiful songs and albums, to give many beautiful
performances, to have many beautiful fans, and to be an artist worthy of existence'.
Bio Lucky Fonz III
De Amsterdamse singer/songwriter Lucky Fonz III (Otto
Wichers, 1981) heeft zijn muzikale wortels in de Amerikaanse songtraditie, van Johnny Cash en
Bob Dylan tot Bright Eyes en Will Oldham. Zijn leven als muzikant kende een onwaarschijnlijk
verloop: via een klassieke piano-opleiding, een gabbertijd, een obsessie met sixties-pop en
verschillende levens als DJ, straatmuzikant en barpianist kwam Lucky uiteindelijk terecht als
folky singer-songwriter.
In 2002, toen Lucky als 20-jarige in Edinburgh (Schotland)
woonde, sloot hij zich aan bij een groep traditionele folkmuzikanten die hem de geheime kneepjes
van het vak bijbrachten. Daar begon hij ook met het schrijven van zijn eigen nummers: lyrische,
ballade-achtige songs met wortels in zowel popmuziek als traditionele anglo-amerikaans folk-tradities
zoals folk, blues en country.
Wat betreft zijn artiestennaam: men spreekt het uit als
Lucky Fonz de Derde of Lucky Fonz the Third. Zijn echte naam is Otto Fons Wichers en Lucky is
zijn toegekende bijnaam. De toevoeging ‘Lucky’ is, naar eigen zeggen, geinspireerd op bijnamen
als ‘Blind’ Willie McTell en ‘Manke’ Nelis. Waar de Romeinse drie (‘III’)vandaan komt, dat weet
niemand.
Begin 2006 heeft Lucky in eigen beheer en in kleine
oplage het album "Lucky Fonz III" uitgebracht. Dankzij de positieve reacties en de vraag ernaar
is het debuut inmiddels landelijk gedistribueerd. De songs werden opgepikt en gedraaid door o.a.
3voor12, Radio 2 en KinkFM. Leonieke Daalder (VPRO/3voor12) schreef op de website 3voor12.nl al
over dit album: 'Verrassend... Prachtige singer/songwriter liedjes met een rauw randje.' In een
recensie van het album omschreef het muziekblad OOR Lucky Fonz III als 'een talent van jewelste'
en als live-performer 'een fenomeen'.
Sinds 2005 heeft Lucky Fonz III een toegewijde fanbasis
en een gedegen live-reputatie opgebouwd dankzij vele optredens op zowel de meer intieme podia
als de grotere poppodia en festivals. Hij verzorgde voorprogramma's voor oa. Larkin Grimm, Badly
Drawn Boy, Donavon Frankenreiter en Jason Molina. Lucky won zowel de jury- als de publieksprijs
van de Amsterdamse Hou-je-kop-Luisterpop singer/songwritercompetitie. In februari 2006 werd
Lucky uitgekozen als Hollandse Nieuwe bij 3voor12 en in juni won hij Mooie Noten, de
singer/songwriter-competitie van Stichting Grap. Daarnaast nam hij deel aan de Popronde 2006 en
stond hij op het Metropolis Festival in Rotterdam. Afgelopen december won hij de Grolsch Grote
Prijs van Nederland 2006 (in de categorie singer/songwriter) en in januari stond hij met veel
succes op het 3voor12-podium op het Noorderslag festival: ‘een hoogtepunt van het festival’
(Hester Carvalho, NRC Handelsblad). Juli en augustus 2007 stonden in het teken van Lucky’s tour
door Australie, als voorprogramma van CW Stoneking en The Beautiful Girls. Het debuutalbum is
inmiddels daar ook uitgebracht (Cruiserweight/MGM).
Zijn tweede album (‘Life is Short’) zal in de winkels
verkrijgbaar zijn vanaf 8 oktober (via MyStreetIsMine/PIAS). Het moeilijk te verkrijgen
debuutalbum zal dan tevens opnieuw uitgebracht worden.
Lucky Fonz III's doel is, naar eigen zeggen, om een rijk
repertoire op te bouwen, met veel mooie albums, veel mooie optredens en veel mooie fans; in het kort,
om een kunstenaar van waarde te zijn. Naast singer/songwriter is Lucky Fonz III actief als pianist
in het Amsterdams/Rotterdams freejazz-collectief Aemstellarcreek, dat in eigen beheer het album "Live
at Crea 206" heeft uitgebracht. Ook schrijft Lucky Fonz III liedjes voor andere artiesten.
